Frequently Asked Questions

General

How can I join?

Users can join Pillowfort for free with an invitation code from an existing user, paying a one-time fee to purchase a registration key, or by joining our rolling waitlist. We will be opening instant free registrations periodically to ensure Pillowfort grows at a manageable rate without overwhelming our resources.

Do you accept Paypal?

Unfortunately PayPal ended their relationship with our platform because of their policies regarding adult content. We currently use Authorize.net, a subsidiary of Visa, as our payment processing provider. You can read their privacy policy on their website.

How do I contact staff?

If you wish to contact staff or if you have specific questions, you can use our contact form, or email us directly at info@pillowfort.social.

How is the site different from other blogging platforms?

In many ways! You can read about some of Pillowfort’s goals and unique features below:

How can I support Pillowfort?

Thank you so much for your generosity. Now more than ever do we need your support to keep Pillowfort online. Thanks to the overwhelming success of the 2023 End of Year Fundraiser we have enough funding to keep Pillowfort online until July 31, 2024.

Running Pillowfort has been a difficult enterprise due to the very things that we believe make us great: we don’t have shareholders or receive venture-capital investments (which often leads to shifts away from a company’s primary mission as they are directed to achieve revenue and profit growth to benefit investors); we don’t compromise your privacy by selling user data to third parties; and we don’t host third-party ads that would disrupt your experience. We also pay much higher payment processing fees because we host adult content. Compared to other social media sites that have millions of dollars in corporate investments backing them, being a viable platform is much more difficult for us.

Users can either make a one-time or monthly donation to help us cover the cost of server expenses and to compensate the team working on the platform or by purchasing a Pillowfort Premium subscription.

What is Pillowfort Premium

In order for Pillowfort to remain online we need money to cover our various expenses such as hosting & data fees, staff compensation, etc. Pillowfort Premium is our solution to building a more sustainable form of income that doesn’t rely solely on donations and registration key purchases. Developing Pillowfort Premium has been a collaborative effort with our community. Pillowfort Premium provides users with additional experience enhancing features catering to different needs and preferences.

Prices as of February 2024

  • Multiple Avatars ($1.99USD / month- Upload up to 200 avatars that you can choose from when making a post or comment.

  • Higher Image Upload Limits - ($2.49USD / month) Pillowfort Premium Users will be able to upload up to 6MB rather than 2MB. We recognize that this feature being part of Pillowfort Premium rather than free may upset some users. Unfortunately, multimedia data fees are one of Pillowfort’s top expenses, and so in order for us to host larger images we need to make sure we can cover the higher fees that will result.

  • Premium Avatar Frames ($1.49USD / month) - Decorate your avatar with premium frames. All existing frames that have already been released will remain free. New premium frames will be added periodically.

How can I update or cancel my recurring payment?

Recurring payments can be managed in your user account settings. You can also contact our Customer Service to further assist you.

Can I ask for a refund?

Refunds are only available for purchased registration keys and donations. We can not process refunds for Pillowfort Premium. Simply contact us to request a refund up to a month after registration key purchase or donation is made and we will return your money with no questions asked. Your account will be deleted if requesting purchased registration key refunds.

Help! What do I do if I’ve been charged twice?

If you notice multiple payments to Pillowfort Blogging LLC there are a few things to check before contacting our Customer Service.

When you add a new premium feature to an existing Pillowfort Premium subscription you are charged the new cost of those features immediately and your subscription will be charged on that date from then on. If you are only removing features from your subscription your payment date & interval will remain the same as before.

If the payment shows as pending or processing this is a temporary authorization charge by your payment provider. Check the status of your payment on your bank statement.

If you believe you have been overcharged contact us as soon as possible in order for us to investigate.

Development

What’s currently in development?

Our focus continues to be working toward making Pillowfort sustainable for long term success.

  • Release of the Progressive Web App w/ Push Notifications - The data is very clear that the lack of a mobile app is hindering our overall growth. A PWA will allow our mobile users to experience all the functionality of a native mobile app and will be much easier for our Developer Team to build & maintain than a native app. We also won't have to worry about App Store content restrictions.

  • Post Promotions & User-Submitted Advertisement Opt-Ins - Users will be able to promote their posts (as advertisements) by paying a fee. No subscription is required to promote a post. By default, this promoted content will only be displayed on a page specifically for viewing promoted content. While this will mean potentially less revenue, it is important to our philosophy to respect our user’s experience and not force advertising on everyone. However, users can opt into viewing promoted content in their home feed, and will receive a discount on premium features for doing so.

  • Subscription Gifting- Users will be able to purchase subscriptions that can be gifted to other users. Subscriptions can be gifted to a specific other user, or can be added to a communal pool for any unsubscribed users to take from. We will provide special badges for users who gift subscriptions.

  • Pillowfort Premium Price Increase - We will be adjusting prices to help us fund our overall operating costs. We will notify the community before any price increase is final.

How can I read about Pillowfort’s business plan?

You can read our business plan which includes additional development plans here.

Is there a list available of requested features to be added?

A list of prospective features to be added as well as known bugs are listed in detail here. This list is updated on a regular basis. If you don't see the feature you want on that list, feel free to contact us about it!

Will Pillowfort have a mobile app?

We are currently in development of a progressive web app with push notifications.

What is Pillowfort’s stance on AI?

As of February 2024 images created through the use of generative AI programs such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and Dall-E are prohibited on Pillowfort. Our policy was shaped in collaboration with Pillowfort Staff and international university researchers. We are aware that Artificial Intelligence is a rapidly evolving environment and because as such this policy may require revisions in the future to adapt to the changing landscape of Generative AI.

When will more accessibility features be added?

Making Pillowfort accessible to everyone is important to us. While Pillowfort is still in beta, we have taken steps towards making our UI WCGAG 2.0 Compliant and have also developed a dark mode. We are planning to ask for additional feedback from the community on how we can make our platform more accessible in the near future.

Pillowfort Premium

What is Pillowfort Premium?

In order for Pillowfort to remain online we need money to cover our various expenses such as hosting & data fees, staff compensation, etc. We do not receive any funding from corporate investors or venture capital because we are committed to keeping our user experience a priority. While this allows us more freedom, our company continues to face financial challenges such as being charged higher processing fees because we allow adult content. A breakdown of our monthly expenses is available on the donation page.

What are the premium features?

Multiple Avatars ($1.99USD / month) - Upload up to 200 avatars that you can choose from when making a post or comment.

Higher Image Upload Limits - ($2.49USD / month) Pillowfort Premium Users will be able to upload up to 4MB rather than 2MB. We recognize that this feature being part of Pillowfort Premium rather than free may upset some users. Unfortunately, multimedia data fees are one of Pillowfort’s top expenses, and so in order for us to host larger images we need to make sure we can cover the higher fees that will result.

Premium Avatar Frames ($1.49USD / month)- Decorate your avatar with premium frames. All existing frames that have already been released will remain free. We will continue to add more premium frames in the future!

If I have an existing subscription, do I have to cancel it to sign up for Premium?

Nope! If you have an active legacy subscription (i.e., a donation subscription made before the release of Premium), you can easily convert it to a Premium subscription, and you can add an additional donation amount to your Premium subscription if you wish to continue going above and beyond in supporting Pillowfort.

What is the refund policy for Pillowfort Premium?

Pillowfort Premium, including credits, can not be refunded. If you no longer wish to subscribe to Premium, simply cancel at any time and keep what you paid for– you’ll retain Pillowfort Premium access until your next payment is due. After that, you will no longer be able to use Premium features. We will however issue refunds for certain scenarios, such as if you accidentally enter a huge donation amount, there is some billing issue on our end, etc.

What happens if I'm charged twice?

If you notice multiple payments to Pillowfort Blogging LLC there are a few things to check.

  • When you add a new premium feature to an existing subscription, you are charged the new cost of those features immediately, and your subscription will be charged on that date from then on. I have donated to Pillowfort in the past. When will I receive my credits?

Every user who has supported Pillowfort before 11:59pm CDT April 16, 2023 will have the total amount of their prior donations credited to their account after Pillowfort Premium is live. Please note that it may take some time after the launch of Pillowfort Premium for all users’ credit to be calculated and applied. Past payments made through our Kickstarter, PayPal, etc. cannot be applied.

Site Features & Tips

How can I change my password/email/username?

You can change all these via the links at the top of your Settings page.

Help! I’m not receiving my e-mail confirmation.

If you are having trouble confirming your email add info@pillowfort.social and no-reply@pillowfort.social to your trusted contacts and then try re-sending the e-mail confirmation again. If you are still unable to receive your e-mail confirmation contact Customer Service at info@pillowfort.social. Be sure to include your Pillowfort username and e-mail address associated with the account.

How do reblogs relate to the original post?

In the Pillowfort system, a reblog is not a copy of the original post in our database, but merely a record that 'points' to the original post. What this means is that when an original post is deleted/edited, all reblogs of that post will be deleted/show the edits. This is to ensure that users maintain total control over their content and how it is viewed.

Can I create more than one account for one email address?

No; currently, if you want to have more than one account, you need to have a distinct email address for all of them. In the future we plan to allow you to "link" accounts together to easily navigate between them.

Help! I can not get past the birthdate input verification page. What should I do?

Most users who are unable to proceed past the birthdate input verification page have usernames that contain emojis, some special characters, or spaces. Our team will have to manually update your username in our back-end system. You will need to fill out the contact us form with your current Pillowfort username, e-mail address, and the username you would like us to update your account to in order for our Customer Service team to assist.

Why aren't my own posts showing up on my home feed?

The visibility of your own posts on your home feed is managed by the options in the Filters/Blacklist modal, accessible via the sidebar. Set "Show Your Posts in Feed " to "On" if you want to see your own posts when you are browsing your feed.

How do communities work?

Communities are created by site users, and the creator of the community is automatically made the default 'admin' of that community. The admin can then appoint other members of the community as admins as well. Admins can delete any post made to the community as well as remove or ban users. Communities are intended as places for you to easily find other users who share your interests, and create sub-spaces within the larger Pillowfort community. Communities have the ability to determine post visibility inside of a community.

How does blacklisting work?

When you open the 'Filters & Blacklist' modal via the sidebar, you'll see two columns under the Blacklist section. For terms that you enter into 'Post Body and Tags', any post containing that term will not appear in your home feed. For terms that you enter into the 'Tags Only' column, a post will only be hidden if that term appears in one of the post's tags-- a post with that term in the body or title of the post will still be shown. This distinction is useful for a couple of reasons. Say that there's a TV show you hate named 'Cabbages' that you don't want to hear about, but you don't want to hide all the recipes containing 'cabbages' that get posted to that foodie community you follow; that's an instance where the 'Tags Only' column would work for you. If, however, you want to avoid all content that contains any mention of a certain term or name, then you would use 'Post Body and Tags.'

How does reporting posts/users/communities/comments work?

If you see a user, post, etc. that you think violates our Terms of Service, you can click the report button (the one with the exclamation point) to report it to a moderator. Please provide any necessary context or information in your report so that we can properly assess the violation. A moderator will decide if the item in question violates the rules and what action needs to be taken. Users can be banned and offending material can be removed for violating the ToS. However, abusing the reporting system can also result in disciplinary action such as an account ban.

How do I appeal a moderating decision?

Check out our Appeals FAQ for more details.

How do you report reposted/stolen artwork?

We take reposted content seriously and understand how detrimental reposted content can be to the livelihood of content creators. Currently our process is if your art is reposted, you need to contact us regarding the post in question at our e-mail info@pillowfort.social, and provide evidence that you are the original artist of the stolen work. Please include as much detail as possible.

Tips:

  • You can hover over the relative time stamp on a post or comment (i.e. '8 minutes ago') to view the absolute datetime ('April 24, 2017').

  • On the search results page, use the 'Filter By' drop down (set to "post tags" by default) to view user or community results for your search.

  • The ability to view posts marked as ‘NSFW’ is not on by default when you create an account. To enable this, click on ‘Filters & Blacklist’ in the sidebar, then click the ‘Show NSFW Content’ toggle.

  • Users who enter their age as under 18 will not be able to view posts or Communities that are marked ‘NSFW’.

  • Add your own personal flair to your own blog’s sidebar by adding images to your blog description in the user settings page.

  • Images over 2MB are automatically resized to under 2MB when uploading. You can only submit images under 10MB to be resized. (Note: GIFs will not be resized, and so must already be 2MB or under.)
