Fairy tales?
"A fairy tale is a type of short story that typically features folkloric fantasy characters, such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, dwarves, giants, mermaids, or gnomes, and usually magic or enchantments. However, only a small number of the stories refer to fairies. The stories may nonetheless be distinguished from other folk narratives such as legends and explicitly moral tales, including beast fables.
In cultures where demons and witches are perceived as real, fairy tales may merge into legends, where the narrative is perceived both by teller and hearers as being grounded in historical truth. However, unlike legends and epics, they usually do not contain more than superficial references to religion and actual places, people, and events; they take place once upon a time rather than in actual times.
Fairy tales are found in oral and in literary form. The history of the fairy tale is particularly difficult to trace because only the literary forms can survive. Still, the evidence of literary works at least indicates that fairy tales have existed for thousands of years, although not perhaps recognized as a genre; the name “fairy tale” was first ascribed to them by Madame d'Aulnoy in the late 17th century. Many of today’s fairy tales have evolved from centuries-old stories that have appeared, with variations, in multiple cultures around the world. Fairy tales, and works derived from fairy tales, are still written today."

Content Guidelines
- Discuss anything you like, so long as it's on topic.
- Fairy tales and folk lore from anywhere in the world are welcome.
- While there are a lot of cool movie and tv adaptations of fairy tales, they're not the focus here. (I'm thinking things like Disney movies and Once Upon a Time.) Book retellings are fair game though.
- Thoughtful criticism is fine, but keep negativity to a minimum unless on topic or behind a cut (e.g. a discussion about problematic aspects of fairy tales or their complex legacy).
- While currently tags are not useful for in-community organization, hopefully someday they will. To make things easier and because I'm big on organization, I ask that you tag thoroughly and consistently if possible. Some suggestions:
- Tag the name of the fairy tale
- Tag for fairy tale creatures (mermaids, dragons, witches, etc.)
- Tag the culture of origin if known
- Tag the content type (art, meta, discussion, etc.)
- Tag warnings and triggers
- No sexually explicit material please, though some NSFW content such as topless mermaids are perfectly appropriate. It depends on presentation and will be left to the discretion of the admin.
Admins
That would be me, afigureofspeech. If/when the community comes bigger, I may look for other admins to help out.
Ground Rules
- Don't be a jerk. Harassment, hate speech, doxxing, ad hominem attacks, and bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated.
- Don't be rude just because someone doesn't like something you do, or likes something you don't.
- If you have a problem with someone, don't drag the whole community into it. Speak with them privately, block them, or message the admin if necessary.
- Make sure to tag warnings and triggers as appropriate.
- Do not repost other people's work. It's rude and unnecessary. Reblog, or if it's not from this site, source appropriately.
- To the best of you ability, try not to post something that's already been posted.
